I have been a licensed therapist for over 20 years. I spent the majority of my career working at UT Southwestern Medical Center leading both research and clinical teams working with people who have Psychosis. Evidence-based treatment and Psychosis therapies have been my passion since I was in graduate school.
Thanks to my years in the research community, I have had the opportunity to train in several methods of cognitive remediation. This is a method of using computer programs to improve cognitive (thinking) skills in people with Psychosis. Often people do not understand that diminished cognitive functioning is one of the hallmark symptoms of illnesses like Schizophrenia. Additionally, I have specialized training in social cognition, early Psychosis (youth and young adults who develop Psychosis), and the Hearing Voices Movement.
Conversations is actively applying for grants to support the purchase of equipment for cognitive remediation groups. These groups require both computer workstations and computer program subscriptions to function. I would also like to offer Virtual Reality (VR) therapy for improved cognitive function, social skills training, and relaxation techniques. Conversations is also seeking funding for additional space to provide group therapy, multi-family groups, and psychoeducation sessions for families.
Starting in October, I will begin training with Oxford University to learn Professor Daniel Freeman's Virtual Reality for psychiatric therapy. I can't tell you how excited I am about becoming part of this extremely promising, emerging field!
We also recently added a new team member: Jamie Campos, MS, LPC-Associate. She brings a new energy to our already passionate clinic. She also accepts some insurance and can work with some clients on a sliding scale fee (based on income).
Just ask us for details!
I am a fervent believer in advocating for mental health management to be treated the same as any other form of healthcare. I work to promote mental healthcare reform whenever possible, including during therapy. I believe that people can create change within themselves through helpful therapy and take that knowledge forward to "Fuel the Change" in how mental health is talked about and treated today. All of these conversations will create the spark for people to fight against the stigma associated with mental health. This is how, together, we can transform the future of mental healthcare. #fuelthechange
